January Athlete of the Month - Joshua Ferrell
Tell us a little about yourself.
I am a 33 year old attorney that lives and works in Williamson, WV. I am about to marry my lovely fiance, Tiara.
What made you decide to start CrossFit?
I had wanted to try it for quite a while, but was hesitant to take the leap. Matt Chandler had told me a lot about it and encouraged me to least give it a try. I finally decided to start because I needed to spice up the workout rut I had fallen into. I was doing the same thing day in and day out, was bored, and wasn’t improving. So, I worked up the nerve to try CrossFit.
What were your thoughts after your first workout?
I didn’t quite know what to think, but I knew I would be sore. I also knew it was a good change from the workouts I had been doing and I was working muscles I didn’t know I had. I was also surprised with how everyone pushed each other. I didn’t know what I was doing, but the whole class pitched in to teach me and made me feel at home.
What do you feel has been the biggest impact CrossFit has made in your life?
Don’t have enough space to list all the ways I’ve been impacted, but the greatest impact on my life would definitely be the people I’ve met through CrossFit. I consider all the people at the box family and there’s never a dull moment when we can get together. Everyone is encouraging, wants to see you succeed, and will always help out.
What is your favorite CrossFit workout or movement?
Dumbbell snatches are my favorite movement. My favorite workout is Nancy or Murph.
What workout or movement do you like the least?
Lunges.
What are your CrossFit goals and how close are you to reaching them?
I want to complete Murph Rx. I am not close. Not even a little.
What is one fun thing about you that we may not know yet?
I’m a bit of a thrill seeker. I like to fly planes and have skydiving on my bucket list.
What advice do you have for new members or other CrossFitters?
For the new people I would say just take it slow and give it some time. Keep coming back and you’ll start getting better and it becomes an addiction (perhaps the best and healthiest you could have). For people on the fence about trying, give it a shot. The people are great, the workouts are modifiable, and you’ll without a doubt start to see improvements. My only regret is waiting so long to start.
